Mareeba Shire History

Mareeba Shire covers an area of approximately 52,000 sq km from Cairns in the east it stretches nearly two-thirds across Cape York. Mareeba, situated at junction of Granite Creek and the Barron River, was its administrative centre and the name is believed to come from an Aboriginal word meaning the meeting of waters.
